Lot 2942
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.37 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate. Irregular mint, after 327. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / S - F / ARLP Camp gate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 313 (for prototype). Slightly rough and with a minor spot of corrosion on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. It is like Arles RIC 313 but the portrait is of Trier style, not Arles, and the gate has two turrets, not four, and no doors.
